Allison Malmsten (2017 Cohort): Global Career in Shanghai

Graduated in 2017, Allison Malmsten (麦小鱼)studied Linguistics with a minor in Asian Languages and Literatures at the University of Minnesota. Through the Chinese Flagship Program, Allison studied abroad in Nanjing and took various management and marketing classes in Chinese. These classes provided her knowledge of local business practices, which helped her secure an internship in Shanghai. Through this internship, Allison further expanded her knowledge of Chinese companies’ practices of leadership, management, and development.

Currently, Allison holds a Media and Marketing Manager position at a consulting and market research firm Daxue Consulting based in Shanghai. Reflecting back on her experience, Allison believes her year of studying abroad led to tremendous personal growth: “The Flagship Program was my pathway to intimately understanding Chinese culture. Although it was ever-challenging, the program flung me on this ever-rewarding path of becoming a China Hand.”
