Chinese Language Tutors

Essential Qualifications:

  • Native speaker of Chinese or Superior proficiency in Chinese on the ACTFL scale
  • Interest in working with students of Chinese as a foreign language
  • Able to work with students with different learning styles, interests and goals
  • Familiar with Zoom online conference system and able to interact with students effectively in a virtual environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate students with background in second language studies, education, and/or linguistics
  • Prior language teaching/tutoring experience

The Chinese Flagship program at the University of Minnesota trains the nation’s most qualified undergraduate students from diverse disciplines to achieve superior-level Mandarin Chinese proficiency and promotes their success as global professionals. The Chinese Flagship Program invites applications for Chinese language tutors in the Spring 2021 semester. Tutors provide one-on-one language instruction to assist CFS students in achieving professional level of competence in Mandarin Chinese. Tutors’ responsibilities include: 

  • Direct conversation with students in Mandarin Chinese 
  • Develop tutoring materials for students
  • Submit weekly tutoring reports

The hours are variable for this position. Each tutor can work up to 20 hours per week, and the anticipated hours for each tutor will be from 4-16 hours weekly.

Pay Rate:

Position Title: Flagship Student Ambassador

Essential Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in the Chinese Flagship Program with good academic standing
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills 
  • Ability to work independently and be proactive in seeking out tasks

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior study abroad experience in Mainland China or Taiwan

Job Description:

Each semester, the Chinese Flagship Program hires two Flagship Student Ambassadors to help with marketing and recruitment efforts by representing the Flagship program in an engaging, professional manner to current and prospective students. Flagship student ambassadors work closely with the associate director of the Chinese Flagship program, and their responsibilities include:

  • Develop content for the Chinese Flagship newsletter
  • Organize on-campus cultural activities
  • Promote the Chinese Flagship Program at community outreach events

  • A 500-word writing sample in English

Pay Rate:

The student ambassadors are paid hourly with a salary of $12/hr.

Job Description:

This position is responsible for designing promotional marketing materials for the Chinese Flagship Program. Some specific responsibilities include: 

  • Create print materials including posters, brochures, and flyers. 
  • Create digital materials including videos and newsletters.
  • Follow UMN branding standards.
  • Complete designs by assigned due dates.
