Plan Your Curriculum

Below you can view the year-by-year Chinese Flagship curriculum. Please note that this is just a general plan. All the listed courses are required for completing the program, but not necessarily in this exact order. If you pursue Chinese study before entering your first year, you may be eligible to register in advanced Chinese classes. Depending on your situation, you can finish the program in a four-year plan.  See the Flagship Experience section for more information and work with the Flagship Academic Advisor on your individual degree plan once you are enrolled.

General Chinese Flagship Curriculum:

Year 1

  • Beginning Modern Chinese I (CHN 1011)
  • Beginning Modern Chinese II (CHN 1012)
  • Accelerated Beginning Modern Chinese (CHN 1015) - taken in fall semester
  • Accelerated Intermediate Modern Chinese (CHN 3016) - taken in spring semester

Year 2

  • Intermediate Modern Chinese I (CHN 3021)
  • Intermediate Modern Chinese II (CHN 3022)
Year 2 Summer: Study Abroad or Domestic Courses
  • Advanced Modern Chinese I (CHN 3031)
  • Advanced Modern Chinese II (CHN 3032)

Years 3-4: Flagship Years

(These courses do not need to be taken in this order.)

  • Advanced Reading in Chinese I and II (CHN 4041, 4042)
  • Chinese for Academic and Professional Purposes (CHN 4025)
  • Media Chinese (CHN 5041)
  • One course in Classical Chinese: CHN 5211
  • Choose two culture courses: AMES 3336, 3337, 3351, 3356W, 3357, 3362, 3372, 3373, 3374, 3377, 5351, 5358, 5359, 5374, 3920 (China focus); CHN 3161 (AMES designation courses are taught in English and can be taken as early as Year 1; AMES courses often fulfill Liberal Education requirements.)

Years 3-4 Summers: Options to Study Abroad

Year 5: Capstone Year

One semester of direct-enrollment courses and one semester of internship offered by Flagship overseas or domestic Capstone centers. Our current partners are Taipei Capstone Center and the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA.
