Flagship Scholarships
The federally sponsored Chinese Flagship program provides Flagship Scholarships up to $20,000 to offset program costs for Flagship students. During your approved summer study and the Capstone Year, you will be eligible for these Flagship Scholarships. Email chnflag@umn.edu for more information.
Provost Scholarships
The University of Minnesota also provides university-based Provost Scholarships for Flagship students up to $10,000. These Provost scholarships are a unique benefit, only available at the University of Minnesota. Email chnflag@umn.edu for more information.
AMES Department Scholarships
- The Lawrence Scholarship in Experiential Learning is a $2,000 scholarship that supports CLA undergraduate students majoring/minoring in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies. This is an ongoing scholarship that can be applied to throughout the year. Read about our students' internship experiences.
- The Ming Li Tchou Scholarship supports students in the Departments of History and Asian & Middle Eastern Studies who are interested in pursuing a degree focused on China studies. The Scholarship was established to help students deepen their understanding of China and encourage them to engage in the ongoing work of dialogue and mutual understanding in U.S.-China relations. The award amount is $750, with deadlines during the Fall and Spring semesters.

Flagship students are competitive applicants for these scholarships. Some application deadlines are 9-12 months before your overseas program start date.
Boren Scholarship ($20,000 academic year, $10,000 one semester) Deadlines: UMN campus mid-November; Boren early February
Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) (all expenses) Deadline: Early November
Fulbright Scholarship (all expenses) Deadline: early September
Freeman-ASIA Award ($5,000-$10,000) Deadlines: mid-October for spring; early March for summer; early April for academic year
Gilman Scholarship (Must be Pell eligible; $3,000-$8,000) Deadlines: early October for spring and summer; early March for academic year
Foreign Language & Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship (summer awards include a living stipend $2,500 and up to $5,000 in tuition and fees. Academic year awards include a living stipend of $5,000 and up to $10,000 towards tuition and required fees.) Deadline: Early February
